Today I reassert my own voice because a courageous man has been arbitrarily silenced and isolated. Today I speak out because this man — a bastion of freedom whom I had come to view as unstoppable — has been silenced by powerful forces of oppression acting outside the rule of law. Today I speak out because without my voice, without your voice, without our voice, this man’s human rights will continue to be violated. Today I speak out in the hope that his ability to fight this injustice will be amplified by my voice. Join me!
A terrible propaganda war of great proportions has been underway against Julian Assange over the course of this decade. A propaganda war with many grotesque and ridiculous tactics, focusing on such menial aspects as the hygiene and bodily odors of its victim. A propaganda war that has branded Julian as a rapist, although he was never even charged. A propaganda war that has constantly been prodding, experimenting with libel and defamation, patiently waiting to see which claims would stick, because any damage to his character is a victory: Russian agent, Mossad agent, covert CIA agent, anti-Semite, anti-American, rapist, megalomaniac, paranoid, pedophile, and the list goes on. Most of these spurious claims have been easily debunked, but the damage in the public perception has been done. The perpetrators continue to wait, hoping to weaken the public resolve to protect and speak out for this abused man.
The struggle against Julian Assange is, above all, an extra-legal fight. It is a chapter in a thousand-year story for freedom of expression and freedom of thought. He continues to be held in arbitrary detention in violation of two rulings by the United Nations. He continues to be held in arbitrary detention in spite of Sweden having dropped the European Arrest Warrant against him. He continues to be held in arbitrary detention because he is considered to be too dangerous to let lose because he speaks truth to power. But beyond all, Julian Assange continues to be held in arbitrary detention, in flagrant violation of international law, having severely damaged the reputation of the Swedish and UK legal systems, as a warning to you and to me. Julian Assange is to be made an example just in case you were starting to feel courageous, and he is held in isolation today to measure the pulse of public outrage.
Lets let them know the multitude has a pulse. Lets Let them know we don’t just have a pulse, but we will fight for this man because he is one of us. Beyond partisan politics and petty fights, lets let them know trampling over the rights of one of us is trampling over the rights of all of us!
